How will my coverage node earn?
Network participants will be rewarded for joining, growing, and improving the Mesh Mobile network. As the network grows, gateways will receive rewards for being online until the network has reached a critical mass of subscribers. A limited amount of tokens will be set aside for individuals who submit improvements to the network that are approved and added. This allows individuals who do may have a Mesh Mobile Coverage Node to still participate and earn.
What makes Mesh Mobile unique?
Mesh Mobile is unique because of our expertise in building networks, and because of our fairer incentive system. In the initial setup phase, the infrastructure and backend of the network are being built by our team here at Mesh Mobile. We have direct, first-hand expertise of the problem, gleaned from building our own Wireless IoT solution on top of existing MNOs across the globe. And, we know a thing or two about building networks, since ours supports hundreds of millions of calls and texts around the world each month. We're also basing our network-building incentives around metrics that are more trustworthy and harder to spoof. Instead of relying on data volume handled by a hotspot—a quantity that can be easily inflated in a manner that's hard to detect—we're rewarding hotspots based on how many users connect to the hotspot, and the duration of time for which those users remain connected to the hotspot. Several parties in the network can verify both of these pieces of information independently, giving you a fairer, more secure incentive system.
Won't this waste a lot of energy?
Energy efficiency was a key factor in the initial design of our network. As such, we're building on top of the Avalanche blockchain, an energy-efficient alternative to Ethereum. Indeed, an independent report by the Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute (CCRI) found that Avalanche uses 35000x less energy than Ethereum. In a given year, the entire Avalanche network uses the same amount of energy as 46 US households. The Ethereum network, on the other hand, uses the same amount of energy as 1.6 million US households.
When can I start using the network?
The network is being built in phases, and our initial phase will focus on incentivizing network builders to set up hotspots and establish broad coverage in two major US cities - New York City and Miami. Phase two of our deployment will involve opening the network for your devices to use, and expanding our network to more locations across the US and the world.
